Background of the study
Social media trends have become central to linguistic innovation in Nigeria, with Instagram memes standing out as a particularly influential form of digital expression. Instagram memes combine humor, visual imagery, and text to create dynamic content that both entertains and challenges traditional language norms. Nigerian users often employ creative wordplay, novel abbreviations, and unexpected syntactic constructions in meme captions, resulting in the rapid evolution of vocabulary and grammatical structures (Afolabi, 2023). This digital phenomenon not only reflects current social and cultural trends but also actively contributes to language change by introducing new linguistic elements into everyday communication (Ibrahim, 2024). The interplay between visual and textual elements in memes fosters a hybrid linguistic style that resonates with younger audiences, thereby influencing broader communication practices. By examining a corpus of Instagram memes, this study seeks to elucidate the mechanisms underlying digital linguistic innovation and assess the long-term impact of meme culture on Nigerian language evolution (Obi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the rapid proliferation of Instagram memes and their apparent impact on language, there is limited research on how these digital trends foster linguistic innovation in Nigeria. Most studies focus on the visual or cultural aspects of memes, neglecting the detailed linguistic transformations that occur in their textual components. This gap in understanding impedes the development of theoretical models to explain the process of lexical and syntactic change driven by meme culture. Educators and language policymakers require robust data to adapt to these emerging trends, yet current research does not adequately address the implications of digital innovation on language evolution (Chinwe, 2023).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of Instagram memes on Nigerian linguistic innovation, providing insights into how digital trends drive language change. The findings will inform sociolinguistic theory and aid educators and policymakers in adapting to rapid lexical and syntactic shifts in digital communication (Afolabi, 2023; Obi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing Instagram memes produced by Nigerian users, excluding other social media platforms and offline language practices.
